About

Hi. I’m Matt, and this is my website. I use it to talk about what is typically called computer-assisted reporting, which basically means I think data and technology can be used for both finding and telling fantastic stories that result in great journalism. Right now I’m a reporter at the Arizona Republic. I don’t speak for my employer or its parent company, Gannett, Inc. That would probably be bad. Things you should know about me that may affect how you take what I write:

  • I am married with a five-year old son, Jackson, and a beautiful baby girl named Claire. They’re great.
  • I really, really like the Philadelphia Phillies, and baseball in general. However, I think that Alex Rodriguez is a bad human being and the world would be a better place if The Red Sox and the Yankees were caught in some seedy FBI sting that resulted in the dissolution of both organizations.
  • For Halloween, I am typically  the Verizon Guy(TM). This means I wear a work jacket, and otherwise just dress like I do every day.
  • Okay, maybe that last one wasn’t necessary.
  • Despite my affinity for technology, I got hooked on vinyl during puberty and love hitting up record shops. Seriously. I went to Italy and brought back Superchunk’s first album on my lap because I had never seen it before. It doesn’t make a lot of sense.
  • I dig the kind of music people with long hair play.
